Hundreds and hundreds of SUNY students have taken the streets! These students walked out of their classes and rallied in protest to tuition hikes and program cuts. These acts are to show solidarity to the Occupy Wall Street rallies going on on Wall Street and across the nation.
One graduate student summed up the rallying with, "I'm here because the state legislature cut SUNY's budget by more than $300 million this year, and then over the summer they passed a plan to raise tuition by $300 a year every year for the next five years." The $300 million cut will lead to cuts of the French, Russian, Theater, Italian, and Classics.
We are talking about SUNY the largest aggregation of universities, colleges, and community colleges on this planet. Four hundred and sixy five thousand total students pass through the sixty four campuses every year. Even a fraction of a percent of the student body will lead to huge rallies and that is precisely what is happening.
There were grassroots rallying methods including chalk messages on the sidewalks announcing, "national walk out 10/5 noon." While most students have heard about the Occupy Wall Street rallies the majority of SUNY walk out students are concerned about sate budge cuts, hiking up tuition costs, and increasing class sizes while cutting courses.
